Master Chief Petty Mario J. Blanco
Master Chief Hospital Corpsman (HMCM) Mario J. Blanco, a native of San Jose, CA, enlisted in the United States Navy in August 1998. He attended Recruit Training (RTC) in Great Lakes, IL, Navy Hospital Corps School in Great Lakes, IL, and Field Medical Service School (FMSS) aboard Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, CA.
HMCM Blanco’s initial assignment was to Naval Hospital 29 Palms, serving as a Labor and Delivery and Emergency Room Corpsman. In May 2001, he was assigned to 1st Medical Battalion, where he was promoted to HM3 and completed two combat deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF I and II). In May 2005, he transferred to the School of Infantry and was promoted to HM2. In 2007, he deployed to Iraq as an Individual Augmentee (IA) with 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance, 1st Marine Division. Upon his return, he was assigned to Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, serving as the Assistant Senior Enlisted Leader for the Director of Branch Clinics. In September 2009, he reported to the 1st Marine Division, deploying to Afghanistan as the Leading Petty Officer for the Civil Affairs Detachment. Meritoriously promoted to Petty Officer First Class in January 2011 and was assigned as the Senior Medical Department Representative for 1st Battalion, 11th Marines. In December 2012, he transferred to the Naval Expeditionary Medical Training Institute, serving as the Expeditionary Medical Facility Program Manager, and was selected for Chief Petty Officer in 2013. Transferred to 3d Marine Regiment in October 2015, completing a deployment to Okinawa, Japan, as the Leading Chief Petty Officer for 3d Battalion, 3d Marines. Upon his return, he assumed leadership of 1st Battalion, 12th Marines. In November 2018, he transferred to Naval Medical Readiness Training Unit (NMRTU) Point Loma and deployed aboard the USNS MERCY (T-AH 19) in support of the national COVID-19 pandemic response. Advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer in 2020, he assumed the duties of Senior Enlisted Advisor at NMRTU Point Loma. From September 2021 to September 2022, he completed a one-year unaccompanied tour as the Senior Enlisted Leader for NMRTU Diego Garcia. Following this tour, he transferred to Navy Medicine Training Support Command, Navy Enlisted Training Element Detachment San Diego, serving as the Senior Enlisted Leader. He was promoted to Master Chief Hospital Corpsman in April 2026 and assumed his current assignment as the Command Master Chief for Field Medical Training Battalion-West in May 2026.
Academic achievements include Command Master Chief Petty Officer/Chief of the Boat, Senior Enlisted Academy, Senior Leader Legal Course, Plans, Operations and Medical Intelligence, Executive Medical Department Enlisted Course, Command Managed Equal Opportunity Manager, Basic Instructor (805A), Tactical Combat Casualty Care Instructor, Medical Regulating Course, Clinic Management, and Enlisted Marine Force Warfare Specialist (Logistic and Ground Combat elements).
His personnel awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (6 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5 awards) and various campaign and service awards. He is happily married to Vanessa G. Blanco, and they are proud parents of two sons, Mario J. Blanco Jr (27) and Corey M. Blanco. (24).
